Photo by Pavlos Vrionidis Moving the New: Artistic Residency Programme (May – June) Styliana Apostolou  Η Στυλιάνα Αποστόλου είναι η επόμενη συμμετέχουσα καλλιτέχνιδα που λαμβάνει μέρος στο Moving the New: Πρόγραμμα Καλλιτεχνικής Φιλοξενίας για τους μήνες Mαΐου.Η Στυλιάνα Αποστόλου είναι μια διαεπιστιμονική καλλιτέχνης στην Κύπρο και δουλεύει κυρίως με κίνηση, χορό, βίντεο, γράψιμο και ζωγραφική. Ξεκίνησε ως χορεύτρια από μικρή ηλικία και αργότερα ως ενήλικη σπούδασε επαγγελματικά στο πανεπιστήμιο Codarts στο Ρόττερνταμ, Ολλανδία. Το 2017 ξεκίνησε να παράγει δική της δουλειά και παρουσίασε διάφορα κομμάτια της στην Ολλανδία και Κύπρο. Έκανε κομμάτια για εκθεσιακούς χώρους, θέατρα, φεστιβάλς. Δούλεψε με – και παρουσίασε, κομμάτια από καλλιτέχνες όπως η Φεντερίκα Νταουρί, τον Ντάριο Τορτορέλλι, την Μιλένα Ούγκρεν Κούλας, τον Αλέξη Βασιλείου, Ξαβιέρ Λα Ρουά, Μάρκο ντ’ Αγκόστιν, Ρεγκίνα Βαν Μπέρκελ, Μαρή Σαουνάρντ και άλλους, στην Κύπρο, την Ολλανδία, Ιταλία και Αγγλία. Επίσης δημιούργησε κομμάτια για τον φακό, έχωντας δημιουργήσει τρείς μικρού μήκους ταινίες χορού και το 2022 παρουσιάσε το κομμάτι της “Soldier Up” στο “Dance Throughout the Year 2022” στην Στέγη σύγχρονου χορού Λεμεσού. Το κομμάτι θα παρουσιαστεί επίσης στο Dance Days Chania 13 αυτό το καλοκαίρι. Για την έρευνα που θα ακολουθήσει στο Moving the New: Πρόγραμμα Καλλιτεχνικής Φιλόξενίας γράφει: “Η ιδέα μου πηγάζει μέσα από την ευάλωτη και περίπλοκη μορφή του ανθρώπου και την ανάγκη του να φτάνει πάντα σε μια μορφή εαυτού, ταυτότητας. Τον σκοπό του, τα λάθη του, τα πάθη του, την μεγαλομανία, την σκέψη, τον έρωτα, τον εγωισμό και την ανάγκη πάνω από όλα να είναι ελεύθερος, να είναι ένα με όλα ή τίποτα και πως αυτές oi λειτουργίες που μας κάνουν ανθρώπους εκφράζονται μέσα από το σώμα συλλογικά σαν σύμπαντα (υπάρξεις) . Δηλαδή πως η ανθρώπινη ψυχή αντικατοπτρίζει το έξω αλλά και αντίστροφα πως το έξω (κοινωνικό, πολιτικό, οικογενειακό κτλ ) επηρεάζει το μέσα (εαυτός, μνήμη, φιλοδοξία, φαντασία, ψυχολογικός κόσμος, κοινωνική λειτουργία). Κινησιολογικά oi ιδέες μου εκφράζονται μέσα από προσωπικές αντιλήψεις και σωματικές μνήμες, με ενδιαφέρει η κίνηση ως ένα μέσο απελευθέρωσης του νου και έκφρασης των διάφορων νοητικών αντιλήψεων, που συχνά οχυρώνουν το σώμα σαν μορφή ταυτότητας, και το πως σαν η ταυτότητα, η διαφορετικά η μια μορφή ύπαρξης από το σημείο που υπάρχει να μπορεί να υπερβεί τον εαυτό της (to transcend) ή να μάθει. Μέσα από την καλλιτεχνική έρευνα μου θέλω να παίξω επίσης με την φόρμα και της σχέσης της με το νου/σώμα, περετέρω να θέσω ερωτήσεις. Τι είναι η φόρμα; Πότε το κορμί φτάνει σε μια φόρμα; Τι γίνετε όταν σπάζει μια φόρμα; Πως η σκέψη μπορεί να γίνει μια φόρμα; Η φόρμα είναι κάτι που αντιλαμβανόμαστε μόνο με τα μάτια;” /// Styliana Apostolou is the next participating artist in Moving the New: Artistic Residency Programme from May to June. Styliana Apostolou is an interdisciplinary artist based in Cyprus that works mainly with movement, dance, video, writing and painting. She started as a dancer from a young age and followed her studies on a professional level as an adult in Rotterdam, Codarts University of arts. She started creating her own work in 2017 and she produced a various pieces in Holland and Cyprus. She made pieces for galleries, theaters, festivals. She has worked with and performed work of artists as Federica Dauri, Dario Tortorelli, Milena Ugren Koulas, Alexis Vasileiou, Xavier Le Roy, Marco D’ Agostin, Regina Van Berkel, Marie Chouinard and others, in Cyprus, The Netherlands, Italy and UK. She has created work for camera as well, with three short films and on 2022 she presented her film “Soldier Up” at “Dance through out the year 2022” at Dance House Limassol, the film will be screened at Dance Days Chania 13 this summer too. The following is a draft of the research idea she is going to explore during the Artistic Residency Programme: “My idea derives from the vulnerable and complex side of human and the human need to always arrive into a form, an identity, an organized universe. The purpose of human, the mistakes, passion, megalomania, thought, love, the ego and the need to be free, to be one with a bigger whole or nothing at all. How are this regulations that make as human get to express them selves through the body collectively, as a universe (beings). How does the human psyche often mirrors the outside world but also in reverse how the outside (socially, politically, domestically etc) influences our inner worlds. Movement wise my movement is expressed through personal perceptions and memory, I’m interested in movement as a tool of expression, freed from the mind, that is able to express different mental spaces that are vital constructs of the self to eventually transform them, to see them in a totality. How can a unified identity from a current space, can surpass the self and eventually transent, transform or learn. Through my artistic practice I would like to play and question on form it self, as well, and it’s relation with the body/mind. What is the purpose of the form? What do we name a form? When does a body arrive into a form? When the mind? What happens when a form breaks? How can a thought transform into a form? The philosophy As every year, in 2023, the aim of the Nea Kinisi Summer Dance Festival is to keep the art of dance energised within the social and public space, to connect with audiences and to open up to ways of making and viewing work outside the theatre space. On the occasion of the festival’s 20th anniversary, we reflect on the history and evolution of Limassol. We see a city that is changing rapidly, an artistic community that is growing and we reflect on the course of the festival and how its actions offer an entrance to different aspects of the city. At the same time, we explore the possibilities of networking and new collaborations with municipalities outside the centre of Limassol. The call We invite proposals for dance films, performance videos and other video works based on the body and its performativity, created within the last three years and not previously presented at the Summer Dance Festival. The call is open to artists who investigate and propose themes of contemporary society and explore a broad choreographic practice for the screen. We accept applications for works made for the screen or works resulting from recordings of live performances with a maximum duration of 30 minutes. Production The Summer Dance Festival by Nea Kinisi provides production coordination and support in partnership with Brave New Media. Παράλληλα, αποτελεί μέρος των δράσεων για ενδυνάμωση της Νέας Κίνησης ως εκπρόσωπο οργανισμό ενισχύοντας τις προοπτικές για τα μέλη της και συνάμα τη κοινότητα του χορού στο νησί. Το κάλεσμα Το κάλεσμα αφορά τη δημιουργία ενός νέου ομαδικού έργου το οποίο θα παρουσιαστεί μια φορά στο Παττίχειο Δημοτικό Θέατρο μεταξύ 17 – 21 Οκτωβρίου 2023, στα πλαίσια του θεσμού ‘Μεγάλα Μπαλέτα’ του Δήμου Λεμεσού. Δικαίωμα αίτησης έχουν μέλη της Νέας Κίνησης με εξοφλημένες τις συνδρομές τους πριν από τις 10 Μαΐου 2023 και έχουν στο ενεργητικό τους τουλάχιστον πέντε έργα μετά το τέλος των σπουδών τους. Δεν υπάρχει περιορισμός ως προς τη θεματική και το ύφος της παράστασης. Όροι και Προϋποθέσεις Η επιλογή των χορευτριών/τών γίνεται μέσα από ανοικτό κάλεσμα και η ακρόαση θα διεξαχθεί εντός της περιόδου Ιούνιος – Ιούλιος 2023. NEA KINISI’s collaboration with the municipality continues with the production of the Cypriot participation in the Limassol Municipality’s Grands Ballets. Philosophy The main objective is to ensure a frame for producing work that is accessible, inclusive and with the prospect of creating a new institution that promotes contemporary artistic creation in the field of dance and performance. At the same time, it is part of the actions to empower NEA KINISI as a representative organisation, enhancing the prospects for its members and at the same time the dance community on the island. The call The call is for the creation of a new group work that will be presented once at the Pattihio Municipal Theatre between 17 – 21 October 2023, as part of the Limassol Municipality’s ‘Grands Ballets’. Members of Nea Kinisi who have paid their membership before 10 May 2023 and have at least five works in their portfolio after the end of their studies are eligible to apply. There is no restriction on the theme or style of the performance. Terms and Conditions Dancers will be selected through an open call and auditions will be held within the period June – July 2023. The proposal is for a work which includes a minimum of three dancers based or residing in Cyprus. The work lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. The funding covers costs related to the artistic creation, such as fees for artistic collaborators (choreographer, dancers, musician, set designer, lighting designer, etc.) up to 10,000 euros. Η φιλοσοφία του φεστιβάλ Όπως κάθε χρόνο, έτσι και το 2023, στόχος του Καλοκαιρινού Φεστιβάλ Νέας Κίνησης είναι να διατηρεί ζωντανή τη λειτουργία της τέχνης του χορού εντός του κοινωνικού και δημοσίου χώρου, την επαφή με το κοινό και να ανοίγεται στους τρόπους παραγωγής έργου και θέασης έξω από το θέατρο. Με αφορμή τα 20 χρόνια ζωής του φεστιβάλ αναλογιζόμαστε την ιστορία και την εξέλιξη της Λεμεσού. Βλέπουμε μια πόλη που αλλάζει ραγδαία, μια καλλιτεχνική κοινότητα που μεγαλώνει και αναλογιζόμαστε την πορεία του φεστιβάλ και πως οι δράσεις του προσφέρουν είσοδο σε διαφορετικές πτυχές της πόλης. Παράλληλα, εξερευνούμε τις πιθανότητες δικτύωσης και νέων συνεργασιών με δήμους έξω από το κέντρο της Λεμεσού. Το κάλεσμα Προσκαλούμε προτάσεις παρουσίασης ταινιών χορού, performance videos και άλλα βίντεο έργα βασισμένα στο σώμα και τη παραστατικότητα του και που δημιουργήθηκαν τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια και δεν έχουν παρουσιαστεί προηγουμένως στο Καλοκαιρινό Φεστιβάλ. Το κάλεσμα απευθύνεται σε καλλιτέχνες που ερευνούν και προτείνουν επίκαιρες αναγνώσεις της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας, και εξερευνούν μία ευρεία χορογραφική πρακτική για την οθόνη. The philosophy As every year, in 2023, the aim of the Nea Kinisi Summer Dance Festival is to keep the art of dance energised within the social and public space, to connect with audiences and to open up to ways of making and viewing work outside the theatre space. On the occasion of the festival’s 20th anniversary, we reflect on the history and evolution of Limassol. We see a city that is changing rapidly, an artistic community that is growing and we reflect on the course of the festival and how its actions offer an entrance to different aspects of the city. At the same time, we explore the possibilities of networking and new collaborations with municipalities outside the centre of Limassol. The call We invite proposals for dance films, performance videos and other video works based on the body and its performativity, created within the last three years and not previously presented at the Summer Dance Festival. The call is open to artists who investigate and propose themes of contemporary society and explore a broad choreographic practice for the screen. We accept applications for works made for the screen or works resulting from recordings of live performances with a maximum duration of 30 minutes. Production The Summer Dance Festival by Nea Kinisi provides production coordination and support in partnership with Brave New Media.
