Exhibit8 gallery in Limassol organizes the latest solo exhibition of the acclaimed Cypriot artist, Spyros Chrysses Demetriades. Under the title “When Analogue and Digital Meet: Limassol in Pixels and Brushstrokes”, the exhibition unfolds an invitation to ponder the ever-changing landscape of art and the dynamic relationship between tradition and innovation. A versatile collection of paintings, digital illustrations, and fine art prints is showcased, inviting visitors to embark on a journey through time and artistic mediums.
The opening event will be held by Andreas Mavrogiannis, Ambassador (ad Hon), on Friday, June 9 at 19.30, while the exhibition will last till the 1st of July.
Nefeli Stylianou curates the exhibition, continuing a fruitful collaboration with the artist that officially started in the spring of 2022, when the Limassol Municipal Arts Centre- Apothikes Papadakis hosted a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Demetriades.
The curator provides a thorough introduction to the context, the content and the artistic media of the exhibition:
“In our modern era, the debate between digital and analogue art continues to captivate the art world. Some argue that digital art represents a departure from the authenticity and tactile nature of traditional mediums, while others celebrate the limitless possibilities and accessibility that digital tools offer to artists. Spyros Demetriades’ exhibition enters this conversation by blurring the lines between digital art and traditional art forms, demonstrating that the two can coexist harmoniously and inspire one another.
Demetriades skillfully captures the essence of Limassol, both as it exists today and as it used to be in the past. Through his digital works, he breathes new life into traditional paintings by seamlessly blending them with digital techniques. By scanning the original paintings into his computer, Demetriades utilizes their outlines as a foundation, augmenting them with vibrant colours and intriguing elements usually borrowed from previous works. This process creates a fascinating interplay between the digital and analogue realms, redefining the boundaries of artistic expression. In his digital illustrations, Demetriades introduces a captivating fusion of styles and narratives. Each piece becomes a harmonious marriage of the past and the present, as Limassol’s historical character is intertwined with contemporary elements. The artist’s mastery of software such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator enables him to manifest his imaginative vision with precision, resulting in a mesmerizing visual experience.
However, Demetriades’ exploration of the digital landscape does not solely define his current artistic practice, as he is most known for his mastery of the traditional mediums of watercolour and oils. By deliberately choosing these analogue techniques, the artist pays homage to the enduring beauty and authenticity of traditional art forms. The juxtaposition of his traditional and digital works highlights the duality and interconnectedness of contemporary artistic expression, providing a thought-provoking reflection on the evolving nature of creativity in today’s digital age.”
