About the artist

Zarema, a self-taught artist with a background in software engineering, is of Kabardian heritage. She was born in Nalchik and raised in the far north of Russia.

Now based in Limassol, Cyprus, her work draws from her family’s turbulent history and the dramatic changes in her surroundings. Zarema emphasizes beauty in light, color, and texture. Her work is an aesthetic exploration rather than a narrative, a visual journey through personal and collective memory.

“Do you love the color of the sky?” marks her debut as an exhibiting artist.

Exhibition Statement

“Do you love the color of the sky?” is a photographic exploration of the contrasting skies of northern Russia and Cyprus. Raised in the Far North of Russia with the sun absent for six weeks of the year, I experienced the sky as a canvas of white or black.

My subsequent migration to Saint Petersburg reinforced this color palette. I recall the sky above the city as consistently grey.

However, a sudden shift in my life led me to flee to Cyprus. Here, I met an amazingly different sky – one that was vibrant, bright, and filled with shades of blue.

This exhibition captures the transformation of the skies from the monochromatic world of my past to the vivid hues of my present. The photographs serve as a visual metaphor for personal growth, adaptation, and the profound impact of one’s surroundings.

Through my journey from the Far North of Russia to the sun-soaked Mediterranean island of Cyprus, I have discovered the beauty and diversity of the skies above us.

This collection of Giclée prints aims to capture the essence of this journey and invite viewers to reflect on the transformative power of the environments in which we live.
