Gilded Glamour, as per Mrs. Wintour’s orders, was the serve of this year’s Met Gala. Gilded Glamour pays homage to a period of prosperity, industrialization and growth in US from 1870 to 1890. Other notable themes from past years include “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” (2011), “Punk: Chaos to Couture” (2013), “China: Through the Looking Glass” (2015), “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” (2016) and “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” (2018).
The spectacular event always puts the fashion world in a haze some might say, personally I’d call it utter confusion. While most of the guests deliver and perfectly execute according to theme, others just…don’t. It’s fashion’s biggest red carpet which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and is sure to draw major star power every year.
Who followed along the diamond crusted road paved by the Gibson girls?
Here are my personal favorites this year:
Janelle Monáe
GL-AMOUR!
I became the embodiment of the heart eye emoji the minute I saw them. The Grammy-nominated singer brought a bit of the future to the Met Gala, donning a glittering Ralph Lauren look.
Blake Lively
TOOT–TOOT! A dress transformation on the red carpet?! It’s always a yes. Lively hit the red carpet wearing a two-toned copper and turquoise ombré strapless gown with matching opera gloves by Versace inspired by the Statue of Liberty.
Maude Apatow
Simply euphoric!
(Get it? Cause she’s in Euphoria…) Wearing MiuMiu and adorned in Cartier…need I say more?!
Lizzo
She brought Sasha the flute to the MET! If that’s not Gilded Glamour era appropriate, then what is. Lizzo wore an opulent Thom Browne look for the event, pairing a regal black and gold-adorned coat with a black two-piece column gown.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Legend has it, that this event is thrown just for SJP to grace us with outfits that would make Mrs Carrie Bradshaw green with envy. According to Vogue, Parker’s dress is based off one of Keckley’s designs for Lincoln from 1862. The three-piece dress features a white and green check design with black wool buttons, which can be seen updated in Roger’s gown for Parker. As for the hat, Phillip Treacy!
Nicola Coughlan
Lady Whistledown in the flesh. Coughlan continued her streak of stunning red carpet appearances in a romantic black and pink gown by Richard Quinn, festooned with feathers.
